"The Job Academy Actually Pushed Me Through"
Kristi's Story
Kristi had been looking for a job for a long time before she was laid off in August, and the layoff made the grind harder. She'd been working as a business analyst for the NIH through a contracting company, and the role sat badly with her. A lot of it involved animal testing, which she didn't agree with, and that was what first pushed her to start searching. Then she began thinking about moving abroad too, and she had a lot of life changes going on at once.
Her search was stuck on two things. She couldn't get her resume to reflect the experience she had, and she had little confidence in networking or reaching out to people. She knew something had to change and she was scared. Putting money into the Remote Job Academy gave her a reason to follow through, because she wanted to use what she'd paid for.
She started out rushing through the modules to get to the resume section, which she assumed was the most important part. By the end she felt all of it mattered. Some modules were introspective, including a personality-type exercise that gave her a perspective on herself she found accurate, and she used it to think about the kind of work that suited her. The community made a difference too. When she posted, someone usually congratulated her or offered a tip, and seeing other people's wins made her look forward to sharing her own. The calls helped as well, since she could submit her questions in advance and know time would be set aside for them.
A temp agency then called her. They saw she'd just moved to the area and had the skills for the position. After a couple of months with no income at all, the stability matters most to her now. She no longer has to sit there wondering where the next paycheck is coming from.
She says the first stretch can be scary and overwhelming, and that's part of investing in yourself. If you're hesitant, think it over, but there's a reason you signed up to learn more about it. Just do it.
