Work from home is now a ‘legal right’!

Last week, the Netherlands became one of the first countries to make work from home a legal right after the Dutch parliament approved legislation. This legislation makes it compulsory for employers to consider employee requests to work from home as long as their field of work allows it.

Whilst the bill still needs the final ‘go ahead’ from the senate, it’s a fantastic step forward for the Remote Rebellion.

Go the Dutchies! 🇳🇱

Which countries will follow suit?? Who knows….

Now more remote jobs.

The Dutch decision to make working from home a legal right is a game-changing moment for the global workforce. Imagine a world where remote work isn’t just at the whim of an employer but something you’re entitled to if it fits your role—this is exactly what the Netherlands is pushing towards. This move shifts the balance of power, giving employees more say in where and how they work, and it highlights the evolving understanding that flexibility is integral to productivity and well-being.

For other countries, this sets a powerful precedent. Governments everywhere will be watching to see how this law plays out and what effects it has on both businesses and worker satisfaction. If successful, it could inspire similar legislation worldwide, leading to a future where remote work becomes as standard as annual leave. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about recognizing that modern work-life balance needs more adaptability.

The cultural shift toward seeing remote work as a legitimate, protected form of employment also forces companies to get serious about creating systems that support flexible work properly. It could mean investments in better tech infrastructure, more trust-based management practices, and a greater focus on employee mental health. Ultimately, this change is a nod to the reality that work can be efficient and productive from anywhere, and the old nine-to-five, office-bound norm doesn’t fit everyone’s ideal anymore.
