Working 9-5…what a way to make a living! 💣
A typical 9-5 working model limits your days to an eight-hour block of time five days a week. But getting up every day at the same hours to clock in and out at the same time can have a soul-crushing effect on your motivation. Moreover, the 9-to-5 workday does not consider when people work best.
We are a diverse bunch of individuals, and we often work better at different times of the day:
Some are morning larks, some are night owls, and others are somewhere in the middle.
A lot of people beat the afternoon slump by exercising or taking a long lunch break.
Some people have their own personal commitments that they need to attend to such as dropping their kids off at school or caring for a relative who is sick.
In fact, I've come to realise that flexibility at work isn't just a nice add-on to a benefits package or a positive aspect of “workplace culture”. I believe it's crucial to a company's success as well as to employee productivity. Since nearly one in two millennials (45%) will choose flexibility over pay, flexible working is also a very important move for recruiting and retaining younger employees. The New York Times echoes this, stating, “it’s not about jumping up titles, but moving into better work environments”.
On top of that, more fathers and non-parents who request flexible work schedules will help to reduce the stigma associated with it for mothers. Potentially, flexible working will lead to greater gender equality! Interestingly enough, Werk's survey found that older generations want flexible working just as much as younger generations - they just don't ask for it as often.
In spite of its critics, the 9-to-5 workday still has some advantages. While it does limit your flexibility, it can help you draw a line between work and leisure time. In his TED Talk, Ricardo Semler said, “We’ve all learned how to go on Sunday night to email and work from home. But very few of us have learned how to go to the movies on Monday afternoon”. In some ways, the 9-to-5 working model is a good way to counter the problem of overwork.
