South Africa Officially Launches Digital Nomad Visa

If you’re in the startup world or a digital nomad, you may already know that Cape Town, South Africa, has become a popular digital nomad hotspot in recent years.

For those who weren’t aware that working from South Africa as a digital nomad is even an option, I’ve got great news for you… South Africa’s Digital Nomad Visa has officially launched!

On May 20, 2024, the South African government implemented the digital nomad visa, allowing eligible foreign nationals to work remotely for a foreign company or as a freelancer from South Africa. The legislative process took longer than expected due to an extended public comment period, but the wait is finally over!

Known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and affordable cost of living, South Africa now offers remote workers a unique base in one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic countries.

Who Can Apply for South Africa’s Digital Nomad Visa?

This new visa focuses on highly qualified professionals, especially those in the technology sector, who wish to live in South Africa while working for a foreign company.

Key Visa Requirements:

  • Proof of Employment or Freelance Work: Applicants must show proof of employment with a foreign company or freelance clients outside of South Africa.

  • Minimum Income Requirement: You must establish a minimum yearly income of 650,976 ZAR (about US$37,500).

  • Visa Duration: The visa is valid for up to 36 months, offering plenty of time to experience life in South Africa while working remotely.

  • Clean Criminal Record: You must provide a clean criminal background check from your country of residency within the last three years.

  • Proof of Accommodation: You must have a lease or online booking of where you intend to stay in South Africa.

  • Tax Obligations: Register with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) if residing in the country for over 183 days within a 12-month period.
