Perfecting Your Video Job Application

Video job applications are becoming increasingly common in the job application process, especially for 100% remote companies.

I, myself, have requested video applications when hiring my own team here at Remote Rebellion.

The surge in requesting video applications is largely due to a shift in hiring practices that prioritise a more comprehensive evaluation of candidates.

Beyond traditional resumes, video applications provide companies with a better understanding of a candidate's personality, communication skills, and cultural fit.

Effective communication and technological proficiency are vital when it comes to remote work, making video applications a valuable tool for assessing these qualities.

As remote collaboration is essential for a remote job, companies want individuals who are comfortable with virtual communication, and video applications serve as a reliable indicator of this readiness.

Here are some tips to help you perfect your next video job application:

1.Tone of Voice

Be enthusiastic! Show them that you are genuinely excited about the prospect of working for them. Get them as excited as you are to have you on the team. Let your personality shine through.

2. Tell them what you like about their company

Yes, the application is about you, but tell them what you like about them and how that resonates with you as a person. Basically, show them why YOU are a great match for the role and company.

3. Do not talk about salary expectations

This isn’t the place, if salary isn’t listed, you can ask about this in an email before they request an interview. Which they WILL if you ace this part!

4. Ensure your audio and video quality is good

As mentioned above, using video applications helps a company look for technological proficiency. Show them that you understand the very basics of how to record a good video using the right tools.

5. Smile!!

No one is looking to hire grumpy cat 😺
