Earth Day 2022: is remote work the future of sustainability?

Earth Day is also known as International Mother Earth Day. US Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin founded Earth Day on April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans marched for environmental sustainability. Over the years, Earth Day has inspired many changes, including legislation on a variety of topics such as clean air, clean water, toxic substances, and endangered species.

Currently, more than a billion people from every country around the world come together to celebrate Earth Day and appreciate our home planet, discuss global warming, and find new ways to minimise our personal footprints.

At Remote Rebellion, we're committed to making a difference in the world. We believe that there are several reasons to choose a remote job over an office job, including greater productivity, more family time, freedom and flexibility... but we are most proud of its contribution to sustainability and the environment!

Remote work cuts down on travel to and from work, reduces office waste such as paper and plastic from bought lunches and coffees, and saves the energy that a big office building would otherwise consume.

Commuting alone emit tons of greenhouse gases! Since 2020, there has been a decrease in traffic and pollution, and our individual carbon footprints have shrunk as a result.

In essence, remote work can make every day Earth Day and we believe that leading by example is a simple way to inspire others to change. In the words of Dr. Jane Goodall,  "One individual cannot possibly make a difference alone. It is individual efforts, collectively, that makes a noticeable difference - all the difference in the world".

To celebrate Earth Day, instead of our usual weekly jobs, here are some remote-first organisations working to make the world a better place:
