What Do You Really Want?
I start every call with a simple question:
“What do you want?”
Almost every time, the answers come quickly: the type of job, the industry, the salary. People list what they can do, what experience they’ve built, the roles they’re qualified for.
But then comes the follow-up:
“Okay. I know what you can do. But what do you actually want? What’s important to you?”
That’s when things get quiet.
Most people pause. They look puzzled. Some even laugh nervously. And then they say:
"What do I want…hmmmm"
Why So Many of Us Feel Stuck
The truth is, most people haven’t given this question much thought.
We’ve been taught to follow a formula since childhood:
Work hard in school.
Get good grades.
Go to a good university.
Land a “good job.”
Keep climbing the ladder until retirement.
That’s what success looks like… right?
Except here’s the problem: many people hit their 30s, 40s, or 50s, look around at their “successful” lives - the good job, the nice house, the stable paycheck - and realize they’re not actually happy.
The Guilt That Sneaks In
When that realization hits, guilt usually follows.
"I should be happy. I have so much. I should feel grateful when others are struggling."
Yes, gratitude is important. But you can be grateful for what you have and still want something different.
Ignoring your real desires for too long doesn’t make them disappear. Instead, it often builds resentment - toward your work, your life, even yourself.
Time for Your Pause Button
So let me ask you:
When was the last time you stopped to think about what you want, not what society expects of you?
Not what your parents dreamed up.
Not what your LinkedIn connections brag about.
Not what looks impressive at dinner parties.
Just you. What you want.
It’s a surprisingly tough question, but answering it could honestly change the direction of your career (and life).
