A Roadmap to Get a Remote Job 🗺️🚗

Do you want to get a remote job? Getting started can seem overwhelming, but if you follow these steps, you'll be well prepared and ready to interview with a remote first company…

1. Define the type of job you want to do remotely

The first step to finding a remote job is knowing what you want. If you're just starting, this can be hard. Maybe you've never worked remotely, or maybe you've worked from home before but not with a remote-first company. Maybe you're looking for something that gives you more flexibility or more time at home than your current job.

Whatever your situation, make sure you start with defining what type of remote job is perfect for your lifestyle and needs.

2. Gain remote work skills

Remote work is different from working in an office with close colleagues. To get hired, you’ll have to demonstrate that you can communicate well without frequent face-to-face conversations. You’ll also have to show how you manage your time independently and are a self-starter.

Freelancing is a great way to build your skills in a specific area and gain experience working from anywhere. For example, if you have experience as a graphic designer but want to go into web development, you can do freelance graphic design work on the side while learning about web development. Freelancing also gives you the flexibility to continue your current work or full-time job while learning new skills in your spare time. Adding remote work to your CV increases your credibility, even if you didn’t work remotely in a formal capacity.

3. Be more visible online

You don't need to be a social media influencer to get a remote job, but it really helps  to have a consistent presence on social media. Make sure your accounts are updated with recent photos and content.

That means, for example, updating and cleaning up your LinkedIn profile, adding followers, joining groups, and posting often.

4. Apply for remote jobs

Once you have completed the steps above, it's now time to reach out to remote-first companies and recruiters! Make sure that your CV and cover letter are up-to-date and that they demonstrate exactly what the company is looking for.

Send off a few applications and be patient! It can take time for companies to review your CV, so don't worry if it takes longer than expected.

I hope that gives you a better idea of how the process works. If you need some additional guidance and support in your search for that perfect remote job, I can help you.
