How to network on LinkedIn without your current company knowing

“I want to update my LinkedIn profile and network to find a new remote job, but I don't want my current company to know!”

I hear this a lot!

Guess what? You're in luck today!

I'm here to show you a few tricks on how you can network on LinkedIn without making it obvious to your current company 😉

1. Change the Visibility of your LinkedIn activity

On the top right where your profile pic is, go to “Setting & Privacy” and under “Visibility of your LinkedIn activity” select ‘no one’ and ‘off’ for the options seen in the picture below:

Then click on “Followers” and allow only connections to follow you:

This will ensure that if you make any updates to your profile no one will be notified (but your new potential remote companies can still see when they come looking for you).

2. Remove connections from your current company

You can (if you wish) remove connections from your current company so they will no longer be able to see any of your LinkedIn activities. But you have to click on their profile first to do this.

SO to make sure they don't know who viewed their profile - change your “Profile viewing” to Private mode.

Don't forget to change it back after you have removed connections so that (the right) companies can see when you’re checking them out.

Note: Anyone you’re connected to, and sometimes those who are 2nd connections can see your activity (posts/ comments/likes).

But the way around this is to not have your activity directly and obviously linked to you looking for a new job. You can simply comment on topics of interest with thoughtful insights, post your wins on new courses etc.

3. Set your “Open to Work” for recruiters only

By doing so, only people outside of your current company who have a ‘LinkedIn Recruiter’ account will see this, it won't be public or be shown to recruiters at your current company.

Once you have completed these steps you can post, connect, and interact with your connections with content without making it obvious that you are looking for a new (remote) job.
