You don’t need lots of experience to get a remote job

So you finished school/ university, or you’re getting back into (remote) work after some time off, or have decided to embark on a career change- How exciting!

Other than excitement, I’m sure you’re feeling a lot of fear. Fear that companies won’t see the value in what you’ve studied, or the transferable skills you know you have developed. Furthermore- you want to work remotely but don’t want to ask for too much when you lack experience. Surely you need to be in-person to be trained right? WRONG.

Remote 1st companies understand that you don’t need to be in the same room as someone 5 days a week to get your best work done. So start your search by focusing on those companies and see what opportunities they have on offer. Make a list of those you’d like to work for. Here’s a A-Z of remote 1st companies to get you started.

If you don’t see a job you’re qualified for/ want to do, don’t be discouraged. Follow these 3 steps :

  1. Follow the company on LinkedIn and start connecting with people at that company with a simple message such as “ Hi [name]I love what [company] is doing and would like to connect.”

  2. Find the recruiter/ HR person on LinkedIn, or if the company is under 50 people they may not have a dedicated person and you can find the hiring manager or founder if it is really small.

  3. Email them with a copy of your CV and a quick intro as to what you can offer the company and why you’d like to work there. Explaining the reason for your career change will help too.

Showing intuition and displaying a genuine interest in a company will already set you apart from others.

Instead of focussing on what you don’t have- focus on what you DO have. If you took some time out to care for children I can almost guarantee you’re a multitasker with project management skills. If you’re just finished university, you will I’m sure have a fresh perspective on things and have some uni projects you were part of that you can talk about. And for those looking for a career change that’s also remote - I congratulate you- it’s a courageous step to make, but one that will be fulfilling I’m sure. Don’t be afraid to relate back to your previous career as that will provide great examples of when you’ve used your skills elsewhere and adapted.

This week, here are 10 jobs (below) that you can do fully remotely with little or no experience. All you have to do is show the company why YOU are the right person for the job. Want to know how? I can help
