Are Remote Job Ads Disappearing?

It’s been 4 years since a large number of people have enjoyed the freedom and flexibility that come with remote work, with many find it challenging, or in my case impossible , to transition back to on site and hybrid jobs.

With numerous companies forcing a return to office (which I have gracefully declined), not only are 100% remote job ads scarce, but the odds of hearing back from a job application aren't great either.

Statistics from last year suggest a notable decrease in the percentage of job postings advertising remote work, plummeting from 18% to 9% within just a year.

However, despite this decrease in remote job ads, these ads are receiving a staggering 44% of applications and 39% of views. It appears that the competition for these roles is increasing, creating an interesting paradox in the current job market.

One of the main variables contributing to this shift is the power dynamic between job seekers and employers. Right after the pandemic, many employers were desperate to attract talent and, as a result, were more accommodating towards job seekers' demands, including the ability to work remotely.

Now, 4 years on from the start of the pandemic, the power has shifted back into the hands of employers who can now make demands such as, “If you cant work from our office, we'll just choose a candidate who will.”

Although it is essential to recognise that the shrink in the proportion of remote job ads does not signal the demise of workplace flexibility. Hybrid roles are emerging as an alternative, offering a balance between in-office and remote work. In July 2023, 13% of job postings featured hybrid roles, up from 8% the previous year.

These roles are also highly sought after, with about 20% of applications and views going toward these postings.

There’s no doubt about it, there aren’t as many remote jobs as there were 1-2 years ago. Therefore, it's crucial to approach your remote job search strategically if you want to stand out amongst the competition.

Remote jobs, and indeed ‘work from anywhere’ (WFA) jobs, although seemingly scarce, do exist though. The key is knowing where and how to look for them.

Tip 1: Don’t just stick to LinkedIn

That’s where everyone goes- so you’re competing with way more applicants! Here are 4 more ‘niche’ jobs boards where you’ll only find remote jobs!

Tip 2: Network, network, network!

By engaging with professionals, industry experts, and recruiters and joining communities you will gain insights into remote job opportunities that may not be openly advertised. And you’re more likely to get the job if someone has met you and knows what a great person you are! These communities don’t have to be specific to remote work, or even the role you’re looking for- they could simply be an area you’re interested in.

Here’s some examples:

Othership

Conscious Marketing Movement

Tips 3: Craft your personal brand & make your profile POP!

Once you’ve found an opportunity, don’t start writing your CV until you know what it is you want and what value you can add. Then be sure to personalise your cover letter. Bonus tip - find the name of the recruiter/ hiring manager and address it to them personally!
